From this point until I decide to change it, I will post a tribute to someone or something, pretty much at random.

Blog Action Day

It turns out that today is the first Blog Action Day. Because of this tremendous event, I am going to make a post about the environment and what my thoughts are about its future.

I am by no means an environmentalist. I am actually not all that fond of hippies and their push to save the world. Really, the world isn't doing that bad right now, we just need to keep it that way. Taking the steps of not showering and sitting in drum circles, while beneficial to nature, leave you stinky and annoying. So my method of environmentalism is one of moderation. If you recycle and try to use less energy as part of your daily life, you are doing your part. Maybe we will see in a couple years that more needs to be done and everyone can cut back more. I just don't see the urgency of "the sky is falling" thinkers.

That said, as a society I think we should establish certain goals to save the planet slowly.
- Remove ridiculous gas guzzlers from the road. These people are killing the environment for kicks and giggles, and they know it.
- Move toward energy efficiency in the home. This means lights, appliances, computers. If energy becomes expensive in the future, we need to be able to live in our homes at our current standard of living without increasing the cost.
- Push towards rewards and punishments for energy use. People who use much less than they are alloted should get some sort of bonus (encourage others to do the same). And people who are abusers of energy pay fines (encourage others to refrain from this abuse).

If we can work towards slow and steady energy savings, the earth will take care of figuring out what the hell its doing wrong. In the words of Duran Duran, "This is planet earth, ba ba ba, ba ba ba ba ba, this is planet earth."
